Switching AI Models Mid-Project (Without Losing Context)

A leader-friendly workflow to transfer conversations between ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini — so you can use the best model for each stage of the work.

The Problem We’re Solving

Sometimes you start with one AI, then realize another model is better for what comes next. You may want deeper reasoning, better writing tone, or stronger ecosystem integration depending on the stage.

The modern workflow isn’t “one AI forever.” It’s best AI for each stage.

The challenge: You can’t simply copy-paste the last few messages and expect the next model to continue smoothly. AI chats rely on hidden context (tool outputs, uploaded files, images, earlier decisions, and prior instructions). Skip that, and the new model behaves like you’re starting from zero.

The Strategic Principle: Export the “Working Memory”

To switch models without losing momentum, you must transfer the AI’s working memory:

  • What the project is about
  • What decisions have been made
  • Constraints and assumptions
  • Key artifacts (files/images) and why they matter
  • What you want to do next

Who This Guide Is For

  • You have a long or context-heavy chat in one platform
  • You want to continue in another AI (ChatGPT ⇄ Claude ⇄ Gemini)
  • You want continuity without re-explaining everything

Prerequisites

  • Basic understanding of LLMs (ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude)
  • Access to the original and target AI platform

Guide Info

  • Level: Intermediate
  • Tools: Any two LLM platforms

The 6-Step Transfer Workflow

Step 1: Export the context (in the original AI)

In your original AI chat, generate a clean handover summary using the export prompt below.

View the Context Export Prompt (click to expand)
I’m about to continue this conversation in a different AI platform. Please summarize and export this conversation so I can recreate the key context in another model.

Include:
1) A brief summary of the main topic and purpose so far
2) A timeline of key moments (including any files/images shared and what they were about)
3) Important reasoning steps or background thinking that should be replicated
4) Assumptions or constraints that guided your responses
5) The current task/goal so I can resume where we left off

Write in plain text, clear English, easy to copy/paste.

Step 2: Save and label your files (the artifact list)

Download any files/images from the original chat. Rename them clearly and note why each artifact matters.

  • Example: “Client-Email-Thread.png” — used to analyze claims and draft a response
  • Example: “Pricing-Worksheet.xlsx” — used for ROI calculations and decision-making

Step 3: Rebuild the context (in the new AI)

In the new AI platform, paste the transfer prompt below, then paste the exported summary beneath it.

I’m transferring a conversation from another AI model. Please read the summary below, then ask me any clarifying questions you need. After that, continue as if we’ve been working on this together all along.

SUMMARY:
[PASTE THE EXPORTED SUMMARY HERE]

Step 4: Answer clarifying questions (fast)

The new model may ask a few short questions. Answer briefly. If it asks nothing and you want confirmation, say: “Before we continue, what 2–3 questions would reduce misunderstanding?”

Step 5: Re-upload files (and label why they matter)

Upload any relevant artifacts to the new AI and add one line of context per file.

View the “File Context” Template (click to expand)
File: [NAME]
Why it matters: This was shared earlier to help with [PURPOSE]. It supports decisions about [WHAT].

Step 6: Continue the work (resume immediately)

Now the new AI is primed. Tell it exactly what you want next. Example: “Continue from where we left off and draft the final version.”

Quick Example

  • You brainstormed project ideas in ChatGPT and shared screenshots
  • You moved to Claude because you prefer its writing style
  • You used the export prompt, pasted the summary, re-uploaded artifacts, and continued seamlessly
