This Week in AI for Business
This Week in AI for Business — 6 September 2026
Five things that happened in AI this week, and what each one actually means if you run an SME.
1. Most companies deploying AI aren’t seeing the return yet
A new enterprise survey found 79% of companies now hit real challenges getting value from AI, even though 59% are spending over a million dollars a year on it. Only 29% see meaningful ROI from generative AI, and just 23% from AI agents. More strikingly, 54% of C-suite leaders admit AI adoption is straining their own organisation.
What this means for SME owners: Spend and adoption are not the same as results. The gap isn’t the technology — it’s skipping the step where you diagnose which part of your customer journey AI should actually fix before you roll it out everywhere. Diagnose first. Automate second.
2. Claude is showing up inside the tools you already use
Salesforce launched a Claude-powered plugin with 37 prebuilt sales skills for meeting prep and pipeline analysis, and Semrush connected its keyword and backlink database directly into Claude for conversational SEO research.
What this means for SME owners: You may not need a new platform to get more out of AI — check whether the CRM or SEO tool you already pay for has added a Claude connection first, before buying something new.
3. Anthropic cut the cost of using Claude on long, repeated work
Claude’s latest update brings a 75% cost reduction for reprocessing content it has already analysed, alongside the option for enterprise customers to keep their data on their own infrastructure.
What this means for SME owners: If cost or data-privacy concerns have been holding you back from using AI on sensitive financial or customer data, this is worth a second look — the economics and the data-control story both just improved.
4. Google is changing how visible your content is in AI search
Google is testing auto-expanded AI Overviews that push traditional search results further down the page, and has rolled out AI-search visibility reporting inside Search Console so you can see how often your content appears in AI-generated answers.
What this means for SME owners: Ranking well in classic search is no longer the whole game. Check your Search Console AI Overview data this month, and make sure your content answers questions directly — that’s what AEO (answer engine optimisation) actually rewards.
5. Regulation is catching up to AI-generated content
The EU AI Act’s transparency rules are now in force for chatbots and AI-generated content, and a new US bill proposes security and monitoring standards for autonomous AI agents.
What this means for SME owners: If you’re using AI-generated content or AI agents customer-facing, start keeping a simple record of what’s AI-assisted and what a human reviewed. It costs little now and will matter more as disclosure expectations tighten.
